Columbia Pro Cantare celebrates the anniversaries of three Howard County icons with a concert that highlights the special connection between the chorus and Columbia’s founder, James Rouse (1914-1996). The program includes Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, which was narrated by Mr. Rouse at CPC’s 1980 Harborplace concert, and Tom Benjamin’s I Build a House, commissioned by the chorus in honor of Mr. Rouse and his vision for the new community, and performed in 1997 at the opening of the theatre that bears his name. Renowned baritone Lester Lynch will be the featured soloist for both works and perform American spirituals accompanied by pianist Joel Martin in the second half of the concert. Also on the program, Copland’s Boatman’s Dance and Simple Gifts. CPC founder and artistic director Frances Motyca Dawson will conduct the concert, which will also feature the Howard County Concert Orchestra.
