Columbia is a planned community that has influenced suburban development since its creation in the mid-1960’s.
The city grew out of rural farmland, patterned by the best thinkers of its time, including visionary developers, and a team of consultants and transportation planners. World-famous architects designed key buildings. Oakland Manor is one example of the structures that preserve its roots within a new town by featuring a barn that is an historical landmark. Columbia is a community that consists of ten self-contained villages, located in Howard County, Maryland. Each village is comprised of several neighborhoods. The village center has schools, shopping centers, recreational facilities, a community center, a system of bike/walking paths, and homes. This is Columbia living at its finest.
